No one thought Lion King would be a success—not even the writers!

The 1994 animated film The Lion King was a hugely successful endeavour by Disney Animation Studios, but there was a time during its development when the producers and writers were not sure about its potential.
Work started on the movie in 1988 and all of the animation was done by hand, except for a handful of scenes. These were the days before computer aided animation and CGI.
The film was under development at the same time as Pocahontas, and many of the Disney animators chose to work on the latter movie, believing it would be more prestigious. This left Lion King with some animators who were doing their first major work.
Even the script writers were not entirely convinced, with one commenting that she was not sure who would want to watch this particular movie. It turned out the doom and gloom was entirely unfounded.
The Lion King opened in 1994 and raked in close on $1 billion worldwide, becoming the highest grossing film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. The film was the second highest grossing film of the time, being beaten only by Jurassic Park.
Not bad for a film made by a few first timers and that no one had faith in.
