Pineapples contain bromelian which is a natural mixture of two proteases (protein-digesting enzymes). Bromelian breaks down collagen. If you leave meat covered in pineapple for a day or two, it will become so mushy that you would not want to eat it!
When you eat pineapple, your mouth is subjected to the same degradation of collagen than meat that is tenderized with bromelian. This is why many people report a tingling or burning sensation in their mouth when eating the fruit.
Don't despair! Your body metabolizes bromelian very quickly and neutralizes the effect soon after digesting the pineapple. Your tongue regenerates the 'tenderized' cells very quickly so you will not be left with any real or permanent damage.
Pineapples also have many health benefits. The fruit is loaded with vitamins and minerals like vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, phosphorus, and potassium. A single cup of pineapple contains 73 percent of your total body requirement for manganese which promotes bone health. It is also rich in fiber. All the nutrients it contains promote good health.
Pineapples can prevent diseases like macular degeneration. Bromelian also keeps the digestive track healthy, is used in treating inflammation, swelling, indigestion and even excessive blood clotting.
