In February 2014, Russia hosted it's first ever Winter Olympic Games. The only other games hosted by Russia was the 1980 summer games, and that was technically hosted by the Russian Federation, which no longer exists.
The games took place in the small town of Sochi and there are some interesting facts about this particular instalment of the Olympic circus.
For one, the Sochi Winter Olympics were held in it's warmest location ever. Sochi has an average February temperature of 42.8 degrees Fahrenheit, which is relatively warm when compared to the below freezing average of other locations.
These games featured some 88 nations fielding in excess of 2,800 athletes competing in 98 events over the 16 days and will be the first winter games to have a purpose-built Olympic Park.
The games also hold the dubious honour of being the most expensive held to date, costing over $51 billion and surpassing the Beijing games by some $5 billion. Considering the budget was estimated at $12 billion, this is quite a surprise!
