The real name for brain freeze is ‘sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgia’. The pain receptors in the mouth signal the brain, however the same nerves are also in the forehead. The brain mixes up the source location of the pain and thus you get the resulting headache!
Scientifically, this is caused by having something very cold touch the roof of the mouth (palate), and is believed to result from a nerve response causing rapid constriction and swelling of blood vessels!
And what’s more funny about brain freeze, is that there are people who cannot experience it! Possibly because of the lack of nerves on their forehead.Next time you decide to get yourself a cold drink, just try to drink it slowly to avoid that horrible feeling.
