A study found red light cameras actually cause more accidents!

A study by the University of South Florida found that red light cameras don't help much as far as keeping people safe. In fact, they've found that intersections with a red light camera increases the number of accidents by 28%!
The reason for this is that people who are speeding try to abruptly stop when the light changes and that's when crashes happen. They did this in the context of Florida considering installing cameras of their own.
The cameras have gained popularity in certain places because it's a cheap and easy way to extract revenue from drivers. However, the safety implications are almost never explored.
In a similar anti-red light camera vein, the city of Chicago has recently announced that it will remove a large number of cameras installed throughout the city.
