Piero Manzoni prepared ninety cans of “Merda d’artista” (“Artist’s Shit”) in May 1961. Each can weighed in at about 30 grams and was priced in accordance with the daily exchange rates of gold. They were first exhibited in the Galleria Pescetto in August of that Year.
Only one can was ever purchased for about $150,000. While Manzoni claimed he filled them with his own feces, no one knows for sure if he did as the cans have never been opened. Some critics have said that this level of uncertainty was a key element to the piece.
