Comedian Drew Carey began his comedy career in the military!

The military probably isn’t the best place to go looking for laughs, but it is a place that desperately needs a laugh every once in a while. This is where Mr.Drew Carey comes in.

In 1980s, in the midst of his own war with depression, Carey signed himself up for the Marine Corps Reserve believing (hoping) that the armed forces would give his life some sort of structure and direction. During his 6 year tenure, he developed both physically and mentally.

While with the Marine Corps, he would practice his jokes on his fellow marines. During this period of his life, he also developed his signature look-a military buzz cut and thick, black, standard-issue glasses. This period in his life helped to jumpstart his comedy career.

Shortly after leaving the marines, he gained the respect of the comedy community. He went on to have his own show, The Drew Carey Show.
