These were shipped to customers who then build their own houses with the help of family and friends. It may sound crazy, but between 1908 and 1940, they sold 70,000 of these home kits.
They offered the most modern technology at the time including central heating, indoor plumbing and electricity.
As the kits became more popular, Sears offered different models for different prices. And they began to offer financing plans in 1916.
Eventually, the Great Depression hit and people were no longer able to afford these houses. Today, clusters of them are seen as historical sites. Elgin, IL, a suburb of Chicago, has the largest number.
