It is unknown how Stegosaurus' were able to mate without hurting each other with their spiky backs.

Looking at it's prickly backs, it’s hard to believe that the Stegosaurus didn’t go extinct sooner. Both the male Stegosaurus and the female are very well armored and it is difficult for either to mount on top of the other. Scientists are not completely certain as to how how the Stegosaurus got freaky.
However, some suggest that perhaps they angled so that they faced belly to belly. Others say that maybe the males faced away from the standing females and backed up.
The simplest technique proposed is that the female lay down on her side and the male approached standing up. Each of these, however, would have required a lot of time and effort. Sadly, the species never had the chance to evolve out of it.
